Abstract

Current practice in contraceptive counseling is characterized by great variation in both content and implementation. The literature indicates that African American women desire contraceptive counseling based in respect, trust, and equity. Conducted over 8 weeks, this quality improvement project compared satisfaction in African American and Black patients receiving contraceptive counseling by a provider trained in the Reproductive Justice Framework (RJF) versus those receiving contraceptive counseling by a provider not trained in the Reproductive Justice Framework. This project also evaluated the effects of Reproductive Justice Framework training on clinician knowledge. Inclusion criteria for the patients included identifying as Black and/or African American, aged 18 – 45 years, and scheduled to receive contraceptive counseling on the day of their clinic appointment. Clinician A was trained in the RJF, and Clinician B was not. Seven clients were seen by Clinician A, and one client was seen by Clinician B. This project focused on the participants who were seen by Clinician A, comparing their pre- and post-visit survey results. An analysis of these results revealed a 0.558-point increase in patient satisfaction. This project found that there was a slight improvement in patient satisfaction when they received RJF-informed counseling, that provider training in the RJF has the potential to be impactful, and that the client participants were grateful for the opportunity to have their voices heard.
