Abstract
There has been a tremendous increase in the interest of developing watershed protection and trails in Santa Clara County over the last few years. The idea that trails and environmental protection can add greater dimension to the quality of life is well understood by many who call Silicon Valley home. This has been demonstrated by the local support of residents who have committed to pay additional assessments to provide for such amenities as open space, parks and trails, as well as for the preservation and restoration of the environment. Additional community support for watershed stewardship and environmental protection has also been evidenced through local participation in grassroots organizations such as watershed councils. These councils are primarily volunteer driven, non-profit organizations that have taken the responsibility to be stewards of their watersheds.
