Housing Development in Imo State, Nigeria

Abstract

Imo State, like most parts of Nigeria, has witnessed a rapid rate of urbanization in the last two decades, with an estimated of over 40% of its population now living in urban areas. This rapid rate of urbanization has brought with it some significant socio-economic and environmental problems, including a shortage of housing, overcrowding, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure and urban services. The purpose of this paper is to study the mounting housing problems in Imo State, and recommend policy directions to facilitate the development of effective housing programs. The report will include a comprehensive review of existing housing developments, from traditional housing development processes to current, modern applications in housing development. The overall goal is to review the existing housing development process in Imo State, and identify policy and structural problems that impact the development and availability of housing. The project will customize these proven successful approaches and recommend them as effective policy directions that will contribute towards an effective housing development policy with the objective to facilitate the housing development process in Imo State. To accomplish the above stated goal, the report will review existing national, state and local government housing policies in Nigeria, identify existing problems and constraints, and recommend policy directions that will improve housing development process with following objectives.
