Abstract
Purpose: This study explores the indispensability of books and physical libraries despite the digital technologies and digital transformation engulfing our lives, work and society.
Design/Methodology: This study used qualitative design and methodology utilizing a systematic review and synthesis of empirical research, institutional reports and documents published between 1978 and 2025 to achieve its objectives. An extensive review of the pertinent literature was undertaken to underscore the journey and permutations of the death of books and libraries. This conceptual review synthesizes the interplay between digital technologies, digital transformation,and libraries in information dissemination. This provided a basis for inferences and extrapolation of conclusions.
Findings: The study's findings suggest that several proponents have advocated for the death of books and libraries. These vituperations have seen more books and larger libraries. The study found that there is great infiltration of digital technologies, resulting in the digital transformation of library and information services and borderless libraries. More institutions and organizations are employing digital technologies in their services to improve their efficiency. Interestingly, the significance of physical libraries is more pronounced in this study.
The implications of this study are both practical and realistic. This will propel universities, institutions, and organizations to develop a proper balance between the aggressive application of digital technologies and the development of physical libraries.
Originality: Physical libraries remain significant in 21st-century library service. Institutions and organizations should develop their physical libraries as the cornerstone of their existence.
