Abstract

In Dr. Alexander R. Galloway's yearly review of the state of net art, major events pertaining to net art in 1999 was explored. Specifically, Galloway explored how net art was evolving. Many people are bored of emails and simplicity in function and instead want new interfaces and creativity, both as an artform and as a software. To many prominent figures in net art, the aesthetics and elegnace play a big part in the digital realm. For example, Communimage is a digital mosaic composed of images that cant be fitted with the audience, specifically by matching users automatically with their “picture neighbors” by email. This type of archived data becoming art began to grow during the year 1999. Another important part of that year was how the offline world was reshaped. Nettime, an email list, had suddenly become web-specific and public, losing the “offline” charm it hard. 1999’s "Net_condition" exhibition at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) was very important for the offline net art world. It became an introduction and tutorial to net art. In addition, Hell.com, a training ground for net art, claimed to not do art or net art, even though they created an artistic pantheon.
