Abstract

A review and analysis of a series of conferences and panels held at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis that sought to examine the position of art in the age of new media. The keynote speaker was professor Pierre Levy, and each panel is broken down into its essential thesis and themes, and then sorted and compared to the traditional seven deadly sins from the Bible. These sins are used as categorical definers for different problems that accompany present-day new media art. In order: Pride, Greed, Sloth, Anger/Gluttony, Envy, and Lust are broken into 6 different sections each taking a look at different trends in new media art. In summation, Pride, Envy, and Anger focus on issues pertaining to the perversion and corruption of art and media; Greed, Gluttony, and Lust focus on the problems that arise out of excessive media; and Sloth focuses on troubles born out of insufficient media. The topics covered within each sin primarily encompass the narrow-sightedness of new media artists, the lack of innovation inspired by new media, and the barriers both real and imaginary that artists begin to feel between them and the creation of their art in this new media age. All subjects brought up in the various panels are compared and contrasted in ways that highlight both the problems and solutions that have emerged in the past few decades for new media artists.
