Abstract

In this book review, Cindy Ahuna summarizes Ken Goldberg's view on the relationships between technology and shared experiences of telepresence and cybernetic systems. The book, "Robot in the Garden" is a collective transcription of telerobotic research and documentation. In the article, Ahuna dissects this book as a breakdown of telerobotic and its relationship with the internet, epistemology, and subcategories of technology based around the internet. The book illustrates critical points of reference regarding telerobotic “case studies in progress; theoretical beliefs; telerobotic scenarios; arguments and parallels of epistemology; questions and approaches to mediation; differences between using the Internet and other acknowledge-based mediums”. The installation of the "Robot in the Garden" is one that gives multi-users the ability to grow their own flowers or vegetables and allows visitors to communicate with other users. Throughout the review of the book, Ahuna focuses on examples of experimentation of robots using human qualities, such as trust and touch. Also, social networking between robots and humans like the robot phenomenon Julia, while demonstrating the use of telepresence. All of the studies focused on the article and book developed from live interaction in remote worlds.
