Abstract

A critical response to the New Wave Feminism, or the Third Generation Feminism that erupted during the 1990s. The article lists movements, exhibitions, television series, webcomics, and e-magazines to demonstrate examples of New Wave Feminism. The author uses Riot Grrrl, a punk feminist movement that started in the early 1990s, as an example. Riot Grrl combines feminism, punk music, and politics. The article lists a few examples of Riot Grrrl culture, such as artworks, music magazines, e-magazines, and websites. The author draws a comparison between the Spice Girls, whom the author describes as possessing “a doll-like grown-up sex appeal, physical energy, confidence, independence, and lots of image propagation” and groups like Bikini Kill, who founded the Riot Grrrl movement with their combination of feminism and hardcore/punk lyrics. Further examples are mentioned in the visual arts with VNS Matrix, which was a digital collective art project that explored cyberfeminism.
