Abstract

The 1998 article, "Chik Tek Symposium Revisited", by Helen Wood, consists of interviews with female artists who all used technology in their work. The Chik Tek symposium took place in November 1997 at the San Jose Museum of Art where many women would share their works and thoughts through presentations and discussions. The title of the show, "Chik Tek" seemed questionable due to the fact that this show was meant to discuss women, and the equality in their work and the art or tech field. Yet, the title was rather stereotypical for women who wanted to encourage empowerment and feminism. Each artist, Lisa Milosevich, Tamiko Thiel, Geri Wittig, Lynn Hershman, Lisa Jevbratt, Diane Fenster, Monica Lam, and E.G. Crichton were each interviewed, and asked to talk about a mixed gender conference, the separation of gender in the art field, and what the term “chick” means to them. Wood summarizes each of their conversations, and each starts out with talking about previous experiences in the art fields and how they got to where they currently are. Additionally, many of them go over why it’s important to talk about subjects like the gender separation and feminism, as well as why it’s necessary to have a symposium dedicated to women only.
