Abstract
This study examined the status of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources and facilities supporting Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) utilization in university libraries in Nigeria. The paper specifically investigated the availability of ICT resources that facilitate OPAC utilization and identified the challenges preventing effective use of OPAC among library patrons in university libraries. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was 28,897 registered library users. The sample size for the study was three hundred and ninety five (395) respondents who were selected using Yamen’s formula. These respondents comprises both undergraduate and postgraduate library users. Data for the study were collected using a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers, and administered directly to the respondents. The collected data were analyzed using frequencies and mean scores, and standard deviations. Findings showed that although many university libraries possess ICT facilities for OPAC operations, most of these facilities are either inadequate or only available to a low extent. The study further revealed that poor internet connectivity, unstable electricity supply, inadequate computer terminals, insufficient ICT skills, and poor orientation programmes constitute major barriers affecting effective OPAC utilization among library patrons. The study concluded that ICT resources and facilities remain critical determinants of effective OPAC utilization in Nigerian university libraries. The paper recommended increased funding, improved ICT infrastructure, stable electricity supply, regular orientation programmes, and improved internet connectivity to enhance effective utilization of OPAC in university libraries.
