Personal Commentary
I joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 as a 3rd Class Petty Officer‑‑in Ketchikan, Alaska 1 year. Then to U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Four months later, an Engineering Officer. Two months in New York‑‑boilers, etc. Got injured. Sent to Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, Long Beach, CA, 1‑1/2 years. Then more training in Richmond, VA. Then assigned as Eng. Officer on LST for invasion of Japan. They couldn't find my ship‑‑waited in Alameda, CA. War ended! I resigned! Back to WSU for more schooling, B.Ed., M.Ed., Ed.D. (GI Bill).
Then jobs as Principal, Supt. in Washington State. Went to California in 1956. Salaries were almost double in California, so we settled there for duration as Educator.
Best job ever‑‑San Jose State University‑‑16 years. Missed my professor friends. Many have passed away since.
Wife taught 14 years K‑1. Were married in 1942. Moved to rural 2‑1/2 acres near Gilroy, CA, in 1982. Lots of yardwork, vineyard, building projects. Have 90 acres wild mountain land nearby‑‑S miles. Camping, dozing, land clearing. Keeps me busy.
We go to Ritzville, WA, most every year. Alumni and former teachers get together. And to Asotin, WA, some years‑‑my alumni group of 1932. And to Odessa, WA, my wife’s relatives.
