Personal Commentary
The first 11 years of my life were spent in Minneapolis, MN. Our family moved to Los Angeles in 1922, where I lived until leaving in 1957 to accept a position at SJSU.
After completing a B.Ed. degree and a special secondary teaching credential at UCLA during depression years, I spent the next 5 years teaching night school and working on playgrounds. Six years of full‑time teaching in Los Angeles junior and senior high schools were interrupted by Navy duty, during WWII.
Navy duty: Officer, 1942 to present. Training at Smith College; duty at Naval Air, San Diego; Aerial Navigation School, Florida; Air Navigation Headquarters, Annapolis, MD; NAS, San Diego, working with aircraft squadrons in final training for South Pacific duty. Detached from active duty, May 1946. Continued in Inactive Reserve until transferred to Retired Reserve, 1981.
After further study at USC, I taught for 7 years at East Los Angeles Junior College, then 3 years at UCLA, when I resigned to accept a position at SJSU as Chairman of the Department of Physical Education for Women. Nineteen years of teaching also included serving on the Academic Senate, chairing the University Curriculum and Undergraduate Studies Committees, serving on the Athletics Board, and on various university and school committees.
Work in professional organizations has been an important part of my life. Samples: California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance: President, Honor Award, Life Membership Award; Western Society for Physical Education of College Women: Honorary Life Member; California Association of School Administrators: Curriculum Committee; Girls' and Women's Sports: Southern California and Southwest District Representatives; Chairman, National Joint Committee on Extramural Sports for College Women; Pacific Section, United States Field Hockey Association: President; Los Angeles Board of Women Officials: Chairman.
Community activities: California Commission on Children and Youth; San Jose City Sports Commission: charter member; Soroptimist International of San Jose: President, Life Member; The Villages Board of Directors (adult community); League of Women Voters.
