Personal Commentary

I started teaching at SJSU in 1990. I retired in 2023 and will complete my FERP teaching in Fall 2027. My research, teaching, and service generally focus on applied communication, as with organizational communication, disability studies, persuasion, and game studies. I taught my first online class in 1999, before the advent of learning management systems. Since 2002, I've taught nearly all my classes online. I chaired the Communication Studies Department for 5 years and the University Council of Chairs and Directors for 3 years. The fifth edition of my public speaking book, Public Speaking: The Evolving Art, coauthored with James Lull, was published by Cengage in January 2024. That same year, Joy Hart and I published our survey of communication textbook, An Introduction to Human Communication: Communicate, Connect, Collaborate, with Cognella. I'm the website administrator and vice president for CSU-ERFSA and the liaison for CSU-ERFSA and SJSU ERFA. As a member of the Jefferson Westside Neighbors executive board, I chair the task force and manage the website for Historic Jefferson Westside in Eugene, OR.
