Playwriting

1920, a play about the sexually complicated marriage of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt, was selected for the 2024 Theatre Resources Unlimited TRU Reading Series.

Stealing Freedom, a stage musical featuring the story of Civil War hero Robert Smalls, was presented by the Manhattan's Amas Musical Theatre in 2017 and 2018

Charleston Harbor, a musical about the greatest black hero of the Civil War, was given a staged reading at the A.R.T./NY Mezzanine Theatre by the Amas Theatre Company in December of 2017.

The Repeating Arms of Sarah Winchester was presented in a staged reading at San Jose’s Hammer Theatre, also in December of 2017.

The Good Coach, a screenplay, won a first prize in the 17th Annual Fade in Awards (2013) and was optioned by Disney.

Bye-Bye Bin Laden! A feature length animated musical satire; the first feature-length animated film to be produced at a university. Screenplay and lyrics by Scott Sublett based on his play. Released on DVD by Cinequest Distribution September 2009. Also credited as producer. Winner, Best Feature, South Beach International Animation Festival, 2009. Official Selection, Beloit Film Festival 2010. The stage version, produced by Custom-Made Theatre in San Francisco, was named one of the top five premiers of 2004 by the Bay Guardian, and subsequently made into an animated feature.

Generic Thriller, a feature-length post-modern farce, starring Oscar-winner Shirley Jones, screenplay by Scott Sublett based on his play, principal photography completed July 2006 (Hiro Narita, ASC, cinematographer (edited by Oscar-winner Jay Boekelheide). Released on DVD by Cinequest Distribution, September 2009. Official Selection, Cinequest Film Festival, 2009.

Imperialism: The Musical. Book and lyrics by Scott Sublett, music by Wayne Wallace. Workshop production, City Lights Theatre, San Jose, CA, April 2007.

Die, Die, Diana: A Musical. Book and lyrics by Scott Sublett, music by Jef Labes. Mounted at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Performing Arts under the auspices of the New York International Fringe Festival. Hope Theatre Company producing. August 2004; production noted in The New York Times, The New York Daily News, and New York Magazine.

Pizza Wars: The Movie, an independent feature, co-authored by Scott Sublett, was screened at the Cinequest Film Festival in 2002 and received national DVD distribution.

Personal Commentary

Prof. Sublett’s journalism has been published by The San Francisco Chronicle, The Washington Blade, and United Press International. He also has numerous independent film producing credits, including the feature “All About Dad,” named by Asia Pacific Arts (a publication of The USC US-China Institute) as one of 2009’s “ten best narrative features made by Asian American directors,” and the indie feature “Glory Boy Days,” which premiered at Slamdance in 2008. he is currently working on a book about the application of comedic principles in dramatic writing, and writing “Gay as Christmas,” a stage farce in which Santa comes out of the closet.
