Personal Commentary
I enjoyed teaching, and some of my friends tell me I have not stopped lecturing yet. Cartography and Remote Sensing of the Environment were my bread-and- butter courses, but it was Europe, and particularly the Mediterranean, that never tired me.
I began my academic life as a post WWII returnee from Italy where I spent fifteen years of my early youth, and it was my living in Detroit that convinced me there must be something more rewarding than assembly-line work.
Both my Master's thesis and Ph.D. dissertation dealt with primary research done in Italy and particularly Tuscany during my scholarship years of 1955-1957. I was three-times Resident Director of the CSU International Program in Florence (1976, 1979, 1986), and since my retirement in 1993 I have been a member of the Province of Florence/County of Santa Clara Sister County Commission of which I am also the liaison. This, and having a house in Cortona, where I grew up (now known as the town of "Under the Tuscan Sun" by Frances Mayes), keep me immersed in things Italian both in California and Italy.
