Abstract

Bay Area living affords unique opportunities for study. The continuing surge in high technology employment has attracted thousands to Northern California and the Bay Area. Expansion of the Bay Area’s economy, and of its population, has created a fervent pressure to develop on both commercial and residential fronts.

The pace of development has made the creation of recreational spaces difficult. Housing required to accommodate this explosive growth in population has increased the cost of land to such high levels that civic capacity to acquire land for recreational purposes has been hampered. The demand for housing Is also fueling the construction of homes in previously undesirable areas. In recent years, land that had been underdeveloped (by present standards) or undeveloped has been improved with a variety of housing types.
