Abstract

Changes in the composition and size of the population in the United States have led to some challenges that have to be addressed. One of the age groups that has increasing problems is the group of persons aged 65 years and over. The advancing technologies in health and better nutrition have implications for the needs of the elderly. Elderly housing problems are one of the implications that are caused by this elderly growth.

This study will undertake spatial analysis regarding conditions of the elderly in the City of San Jose by using U.S. census tract data and maps generated by a GIS program.

This planning report is divided into two parts.

Part I consists of tliree chapters. The first chapter explains the background, purpose, and methodology of the study. The second chapter discusses some terminologies and senior housing programs. The third chapter reviews general statistics of the study in the relationship between affordable senior housing with public transportation, health services. and other services as a part of a city-wide analysis of persons age 65 years and over and housing characteristics in the City of San Jose.

Part II is a case study consisting of two chapters. The first chapter examines an affordable senior housing complex in the City of San Jose. The Miranda Villa senior housing project in District 6 is analysed, in terms of its relationship to mandatory and desirable services. The last chapter presents the conclusions of the study.
