Abstract

Environmental protection has come to the forefront of both government agencies and corporations’ attention. Concern over environmental protection has resulted in an onslaught of legislation and activities from protection groups. As a result of this, an international standard, IS014000 was published in 1996. IS014000 is an international standard created to aide companies in implementing an effective environmental management system.

The goal of this project was to provide a tool for companies to determine their level of compliance with IS014000 along with specific Federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The tool consists of a questionnaire which outlines the requirements of IS014000 and relevant environmental legislation.

The effectiveness of the tool was validated through beta-site testing, which consisted of three companies completing the questionnaire. The responses were summarized into the form of a compliance report, itemizing the company’s current status against the requirements of IS014000 and relevant Federal, state, and local environmental legislation.
