Abstract
In hard disk drives, a read write recording head is an essential component. Millions of recording heads are produced each year. Testing these heads on various testers is an imposing task. Read Write channels are emulated on these testers to test the functionality of these heads. The testers must be calibrated periodically, particularly in a production environment. This project focuses on improving this calibration process by developing a new calibration technique. An improved method of calibrating Peak Detection and Synchronous Channels used in testers is designed and verified.
The signal generator designed for calibrating Peak Detection Channel was fabricated into printed circuit boards and tested. Test results were in agreement with the simulations. The signal generator for Synchronous Channel is an extension of Peak Detection Calibrator and requires one additional printed circuit board. The detail design of this board was completed but not fabricated pending successful implementation of the Peak Detection Calibrator.
