Abstract
This report examines the historical development and implementation of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Santa Clara County, focusing on the 20-mile Guadalupe Corridor. Driven by rapid population growth and escalating traffic demands, the project was conceived to connect southern San Jose's residential areas with northern industrial centers while revitalizing the downtown district. The study details the planning, funding, and construction phases of the $545 million project, which began in the early 1980s under the administration of the Santa Clara County Transportation Agency (SCCTA) and was supported by a coalition of federal, state, and local funding. Furthermore, the report highlights the structural integration of a $47 million downtown transit mall into the system's design. Ultimately, the project culminated in the successful deployment of one of the longest and most technologically advanced LRT corridors built in the United States during the latter half of the 20th century.
