Abstract
“In order to address the complex issues of the 21st century, we need strong, purposeful, and dynamic community engagement professionals in the field of higher education community engagement”. “Currently, the field seems to know more about the infrastructures responsible for managing community engagement than we do about the individuals working within these spaces”. Storytelling builds empathy. Empathy is the work of the heart. Empathy creates a shared understanding of our lived experiences. The Bracero Program was initiated in 1942, during World War II, as a temporary war measure to address the labor needs in both the agriculture and railroad industries. The program brought millions of Mexican guest workers to the United States and spanned over 28 states, including Arizona, Arkansas, California, New Mexico, and Texas. In addition, policies and procedures held by the University can sometimes be seen as an additional barrier that further separates the community and the university.
