Abstract
In fall 2003, I set out to see if it was possible to change social structure through service learning. I had been involved in the service-learning movement for almost 20 years. I had personally taken 20 student groups on domestic and international summer service-learning trips, taught over 30 service-learning courses, developed three service-learning leadership programs, and wrote my dissertation and six articles on service learning. I had dedicated my entire professional career to service learning; however, I began to have doubts about the effectiveness of service learning to change society.
