Abstract
Community engagement has a lengthy history in the Department of Anthropology at San Jose State University, grounded largely in the realities of the region and the constraints on student learning. Ethnographic Methods (ANTH 149), the department’s cultural anthropology research methods course, has been taught regularly by Darrah since 1991. The pedagogical strategy involves learning about a method from lecture and readings, practicing and discussing it in class, and then applying it in the real world. The team dynamics were conducive to achieving the project goals. The Health Trust is currently incorporating the report into its strategic planning process and exploring its implications for program planning, training and communication, and interacting with other organizations.
