Abstract

This book examines a wide range of factors that can influence how police determine foul play in possible murders and other possible crimes. A new theory of uncertainty at the micro, meso, and macro levels is developed to explain how lawyers arrive at this decision. In particular, it examines the extent to which uncertainty in these situations may be influenced by media coverage, family and community pressures, socioeconomic factors, victim demographics, and police knowledge and resources.

This book describes how forensic professionals can advise law enforcement on issues such as staging crime scenes to conceal intent, initiating community strategies to search for missing persons, and the reliability of behavioral profiling. The latest research from the Foul Play Project and the Missing Persons Project is used to support the recommendations in this book and to point the way for further research in this area.
