Abstract

Planning and placemaking are crucial aspects of urban development that have the potential to create significant social and economic benefits for communities. However, it is essential to recognize that the very history of urban planning is in no small part a history of trauma. From its earliest incarnations in the religious-ceremonial foundations of some early cities to its professional origins in response to social problems in the 19th century, on up through 20th-and 21st-century schemes of urban renewal, megadevelopment, and gentrification, planning has both responded to and created traumatic events.
