Abstract
In this chapter, I detail the process - inclusive of challenges and successes - of conducting a participatory evaluation (PE) with a sport for development (SfD) project when the academic researcher is also a diasporic cultural insider. I focus specifically on how cultural insiders can navigate and negotiate with co-researchers how to best incorporate cultural knowledge and practices in participatory research. Drawing from my experience working with Football for All in Vietnam, a Vietnamese SfD project, in this chapter I detail the how to of PE by unpacking how Vietnamese language and culture were used to galvanize local participants, produce culturally sensitive methods (e.g., interviews) and outputs (e.g., community forums), and mobilize knowledge developed through the process. In this way, I seek to inform future participatory research in sport and physical activity by emphasizing implications being a cultural insider and the potential it has to facilitate a rich collaborative research process.
