Abstract
Over the last two decades, several Caribbean nations have experienced high prison population rates. Research in the United States shows that having a criminal record alters a person’s reentry into society, reducing their opportunities for employment, housing, professional licensure etc. Limited information is known about the impact of a criminal record on persons in the Caribbean. This information is essential to ensure formerly convicted persons can successfully reintegrate into society. This book chapter explores the literature on (1) the prison population rates in the Caribbean, (2) the impact of a criminal record on formerly convicted persons in the US, and (3) the reentry experiences of persons convicted of crimes in the Caribbean and removed migrants sent back to their nation of birth. Policy recommendations will be provided.
