Abstract
A major focus of linguistic landscape research has been on the semiotic affordances emigrant groups take with them or attempt to recreate in their new homes. Among the largest and longest continuing population migrations have been those of the Chinese diasporas, resulting in the establishment of Chinese enclaves in urban areas large and small worldwide and generating research on issues of identity, assimilation, and cultural contestation. This chapter describes, discusses, and synthesizes previous research on the linguistic landscapes of Chinatowns around the world, summarizes the current state of research, and identifies potential agendas for future research.
