Abstract

This chapter explores the pivotal role that nutrition plays in supporting maternal well-being and ensuring a healthy pregnancy. Delving into the intricate dynamics of maternal nutrition, this chapter addresses crucial aspects such as nutrient requirements, dietary considerations, and the impact on fetal development. It emphasizes the significance of balanced and wholesome nutrition in preventing complications, supporting optimal fetal growth, and enhancing maternal health throughout the gestational journey. In that realm, this chapter also identifies the dietary guidelines recommended for people with comorbid conditions or those who may otherwise be considered at greater risk for pregnancy complications. From essential vitamins and minerals to macronutrients, this chapter provides evidence-based insights and practical guidelines so that expectant mothers can make informed dietary choices. This chapter also identifies significant considerations for nutrition therapy during breastfeeding and lactation. Given that overall considerations for maternal health range from conception to delivery and after gestation, this chapter also discusses barriers and challenges to maintaining healthy nutrition during these stages and the short- and long-term impacts on health outcomes that may be observed as a result. To address these barriers, this chapter identifies major public health initiatives and interventions designed to promote a healthy pregnancy. With a focus on promoting maternal and fetal vitality, this chapter serves as an invaluable resource for healthcare professionals, researchers, and mothers-to-be, guiding them toward fostering a nourishing environment for a successful and healthy pregnancy.
