Abstract
Domestic and intimate partner violence (DV/IPV) remain pressing public health and human rights concerns in the United States, affecting millions annually across all demographics. Over the past three decades, federal and state governments have introduced a complex legal framework to prevent violence, protect survivors, and prosecute offenders. This article reviews the evolution and scope of key U.S. policies, including landmark federal legislation like the Violence Against Women Act, firearm-related protections, and variations in state-level enforcement and support mechanisms. Through a comparative analysis, I identify key gaps in protection, enforcement challenges, and disparities in policy implementation. I conclude with recommendations for a more unified, trauma-informed, and equitable response to DV/IPV across jurisdictions.
