Abstract
“Family-Based Programs for LGBTQ+ Family Caregivers” covers program adaptations for LGBTQ+ caregivers, given the unique parenting issues they face, the ever-present possibility of stigmatization from others, and the increased effects of minority stress. It is possible that many sites offering family group interventions might also be serving LGBTQ+ family members. Programs for LGBTQ+ family members should be attuned to their trauma histories, which are closely aligned with their developing identity. The chapter presents examples of programs adapted for this population that are affirmative and non-stigmatizing. The involvement of chosen families of LGBTQ+ individuals in formal SUD treatment seems to be very infrequent in most formal treatment programs. The Matrix Model is an example that includes a family component, which is important to help facilitate positive outcomes, especially for substance use problems.
