Abstract

This chapter focuses on the subfield of critical intercultural communication studies and its engaged and yet tenuous relationship with transnationalism. With its deep engagement of situated power interests and positionalities within and around culture, critical intercultural communication studies is watchful over, deeply suspicious of, and yet open to surprise by transnational structures, entities, and moments. While critical intercultural communication studies was born of a departure from culture as exclusively nation, transnationalism, and or the movement of people, capital, and goods across national borders/states, remains a dynamic zone of multiple and colliding power forces (governmental structures, economic systems, settler colonial legacies, diasporic politics, to name several), a dynamic zone that requires vigilant critique and confrontation.
