Abstract

Librarians perform academic and professional functions in universities, which require them to have job satisfaction for effective job performance. This study worked at the intersection of research competencies, technological skills and job satisfaction among librarians in universities in Delta State, Nigeria. The population of the study was the entire 81 librarians in universities in the state. A total population sampling was adopted. Data collected using a structured questionnaire was analysed using mean and standard deviation. The study found a high level of research competence, technology skills, and job satisfaction among the librarians in the universities. Conclusion the study found that librarians possess a high level of research competence, especially in information dissemination (𝑥̄ = 4.06), computer/ICT skills (𝑥̄ =3.53) and critical thinking skills (𝑥̄ =3.51) and low competencies in research data management (𝑥̄ =2.31). Librarians also possess high level of technological skills particularly in social media use (𝑥̄ = 4.12), basic computing (𝑥̄ = 4.12) and internet browsing (𝑥̄ =3.80). However, there is a low level of Cloud storage devices (𝑥̄ =2.22). Finally librarians are satisfied with their jobs, especially with employee recognition (𝑥̄ =3.31), promotion opportunities(𝑥̄ =4.10), remuneration(𝑥̄ =3.83), work environment (𝑥̄ =3.19)  and good leadership styles(𝑥̄ =3.69),  It was recommended that the university should organise training, workshops, and certification programmes for the librarians to enhance their research skills, particularly research data management skills. The librarians should improve their technological skills in areas such as cloud storage, antivirus management, and open-source library systems.
