Abstract
Background: Information security compliance comprises adhering to established policies, protocols and to ensure absolute security. Despite the importance of security compliance in academic libraries, evidence from previous studies reported a low level of information security compliance among personnel in public university libraries in North-East Nigeria. However, proper leadership styles influence information security compliance leading to absolute protection of information systems. So, this study explored the influences of leadership styles in security compliance in public university libraries in North-East, Nigeria.
Method: This study adopted a survey research design. The population consisted of 618 library personnel from the 14 public university libraries in the North-East, Nigeria. Sample size of 237 was determined using Krejcie and Mogan’s formula. Proportionate sampling technique was used to select the respondents. A structured and validated questionnaire with Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.72 to 0.94 was used for data collection and the response rate was 76%. Descriptive and inferential (multiple linear regression) statistics were used for data analysis at 5% level of significance
Findings/results: The findings showed that leadership styles in terms of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire significantly influence information security compliance among library personnel in public university libraries in North-East, Nigeria (Adj.R² = 0.30), F (3, 176) = 26.15, p < 0.05)
Implications: The study concluded that information security compliance in public university libraries in North-East, Nigeria is mostly high, driven mainly by effective leadership style.
Conclusion/recommendations: the study found transformational leadership the most influential in promoting compliance, followed by transactional leadership while laissez-faire leadership has little to no effect. With such, library administrators are advised to stick to transformational and transactional leadership and avoid laissez-faire style which has no effect on security compliance.
