Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study provided the role of libraries as sources of information on organic agriculture to the farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Organic agriculture/farming is the process of producing food naturally. Two hundred (200) questionnaires were distributed for administration, but only one hundred and eighty-five (185) questionnaires were returned, representing 92.5%, and were found useful for this study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the returned questionnaires. The data was analysed using frequency tables, simple percentages, and regression analysis tests for dependent and independent variables. The study discovered that 90.8% of the respondents used libraries as a source of information, while 9.2% did not use libraries. Also, the majority of the farmers were male, married, and only 13.5% had no formal education, and Repackages organic farming information for easy accessibility and Presents agricultural documentaries through video to educate organic farmers. The library uses ICT tools to enhance free access to the existing database for the organic farmers, providing free access to the existing database, such as AGORA and TEEAL, for organic farmers and Bridging the gaps between researchers and organic farmers was strongly agreed upon as a role of libraries by organic farmers. Also, 90.2% of the farmers were aware of the roles of the as sources of information. Further, public libraries (63.1%) and special libraries (25.0%) were the most preferred libraries used by organic farmers in Oyo State. Benefits of libraries in sourcing right information on the latest research results on organic farming: 51.2% was the most, and the distant location of the library and low level of awareness about libraries as sources of organic information (25.6%) were the most serious problems militating against the use of libraries by the organic farmers. The finding also shows that the demographic factors of the farmers do not affect it, but the level of education has a great impact on the use of the libraries by organic farmers.
