Description

The University Library at San Jose State University (SJSU) began creating its collection of online tutorials in 2008. In the five years since then, the tutorials have gone from proprietary digital learning objects on the library website to an open online video collection available through YouTube and Vimeo. Creating open educational resources requires making decisions about accessibility, open licensing, and appropriate formats. In this presentation, the speakers will discuss mistakes that were made, how best practices developed, and how the collection continues to evolve through the use of open source software called Guide on the Side.

Guide on the Side is an open source tool from the University of Arizona that provides a way to create interactive online tutorials. Librarians at SJSU are using Guide on the Side to teach online learners how to use the library databases in real time. These new tutorials increase active learning by involving students directly with the database and letting them learn by doing. The speakers will discuss the new technical and creative challenges this next step presents and the benefits it provides.
