Description
Students are the group most affected by the high cost of textbooks. They want and need to join the Open Educational Resources advocacy movement so that we can all work together to help reduce the cost of students’ education. To date, there have been few resources available to students that are tailored to California in just how to advocate for systemic increased adoption of OER. Fortunately, this year, a group of students from two CCC and two CSU received funding from the Michelson 20MM Foundation to develop a student OER advocacy toolkit to be utilized statewide. These eight young leaders are working under the guidance of James Glapa-Grossklag and Dr. Barbara Illowsky. They meet mostly virtually to discuss and create resources that each of them may adapt for their needs. The toolkit includes how to recruit and develop new student leaders, as well. There are educational sections on the background of OER, along with templates for how to approach their student governments, table on campus and show appreciation to faculty who’ve switched to free and low-cost textbook alternatives.
Faculty, administrators and staff will learn about a variety of benefits to the virtual model used for this project and learn how these eight former strangers worked together collaboratively. A SJSU student will share the activities they run on their own campuses and how they’ve successfully promoted OER adoption at their campuses. The Michelson 20MM Foundation will share why they are so passionate about funding this work.
