The School of Planning, Policy and Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary academic unit, was launched in September 2025. The school brings together programs in environmental studies, geography and geographic information systems (GIS), public administration, and urban planning to address some of the most critical and complex challenges facing society today.
The mission of the School of Planning, Policy and Environmental Studies is to prepare students to build sustainable, resilient, and just communities that support both people and the planet. By integrating these closely related disciplines within a single academic framework, SJSU fosters a holistic approach to issues such as climate change and environmental justice, affordable housing and transportation, and governance and social conflict.
