The Beethoven Journal

Aims & Scope

Since 1986, the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies at San José State University has published a regular periodical devoted to Beethoven. From 1986 to 2020 the periodical was in print format that included substantial essays, reviews of new books, scores, recordings, and auction reports. From 1986 until 1994, the publication was titled The Beethoven Newsletter. From Vol. 10 onward, the title was changed to The Beethoven Journal.

Beginning with Vol. 35, The Beethoven Journal moved to the current online format. In 2021 the journal editors recruited an international editorial board of leading Beethoven scholars and implemented a blind peer-review process to ensure consistently high scholarly standards. The Beethoven Journal publishes articles, reviews of recently published books and scores, and conference reports covering all aspects of Beethoven scholarship. Although the journal is less geared towards purely music-theoretical studies, we welcome submissions with a deep theoretical approach that relate to other perspectives.

The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies is committed to making Beethoven scholarship accessible to everyone. The Beethoven Journal is open-access, which means that all content is available free of charge.

We are grateful for support from San José State University and the American Beethoven Society. For information on how to support the Beethoven Center and its mission, visit https://americanbeethovensociety.org
