Personal Commentary
My teaching career was interrupted when I was drafted into the military service in Michigan. I spent four years (1942‑1946) in the military during WWII, two and half years were spent in Europe in Air Force Intelligence, and 18 months in military government in Germany.
My 33 years at San Jose State were most gratifying. I enjoyed my association with students and faculty. In 1966‑67, I was in Vietnam on a Fuibright grant. I taught history at the Vietnamese‑American Association in Saigon and also at the University of Dalat in the Central Highlands.
Since my retirement, I have pursued one of my favorite pastimes which is traveling. I have traveled in 66 countries of the world, and in all 50 states of the United States. In September my wife and I will be touring Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
We both are active in church activities. My wife is Wedding Coordinator and I am involved in promoting religious liberty and also teach a Bible Class.
The most tragic experience in our lives took place during a family reunion at our home during the Christmas Holidays in 1992. Our oldest son and his girlfriend were both killed in an automobile accident in a rainstorm on I‑280 in Los Altos. It was a devastating experience from which my wife and I have not recovered. We still grieve, although the passage of time makes it easier.
