Personal Commentary
Born in Long Beach, CA, he began his study of violin and piano at the age of 5. He received his Master of Music degree in violin and composition from the University of Southern California, where he also completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree under the renowned neo‑classicist Ingoif Dahi. He is Professor Emeritus of Music at San Jose State University, CA, where he taught composition and theory for 27 years. He has directed Greek Orthodox choirs since 1951 and has written extensively for the Orthodox Church, including four complete liturgies and many settings of seasonal propers. In recognition of his work in church music has awarded the title of Archon Lampadatios by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople in 1976 and the Axion Award from the Hellenic American Professional Society of California in 1989. In 1993, he was appointed Music Minister of the Diocese of San Franciso. Dr. Zes is now director of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox choir in San Jose, CA.
