Personal Commentary

Dr. Jan English Lueck is a retired Professor of Anthropology and a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for the Future. She was the president of the Southwestern Anthropological Association and the Society for the Anthropology of Work. English-Lueck combines research and practice to improve public awareness of critical issues of the urban West. Before she came to San José State University she taught at the University of Puget Sound, CSU, Fresno, and the Chengdu University of Science and Technology.

Her earliest book, based on her dissertation, was Health in the New Age. Shortly after her Fulbright in Hong Kong she wrote Chinese Intellectuals on the World Frontier. Her books on Silicon Valley included Cultures@SiliconValley, now in its second edition. Along with Charles Darrah and James Freeman, she wrote Busier than Ever! Why American Families Can’t Slow Down. English-Lueck also published Being and Well-being: Health and the Working Bodies of Silicon Valley. The book under currently under review is Playing with Fire, Reworking Silicon Valley, which explores the connections between Burning Man and Silicon Valley. She is currently consulting with Mosaic America on the Mosaic Atlas, mapping cultural arts in the San Francisco Bay Area using digital tools to promote the humanities.
