Abstract
The history of Gay colonization in North America is a very complex issue. First it is necessary to focus on what factors led to the creation of Gay communities in North America. From those factors we must determine how that community made its mark on the urban landscape and how that community looks today. In order to do this, I have chosen to illustrate the Gay community on a national scale then focus on a city that is a microcosm of this change. That city is Atlanta, Georgia.
The City of Atlanta is a large city with a well-established Gay community. The community is both a politically active and visible part of everyday life in Atlanta. The City of Atlanta and its Gay community have gone through several evolutions throughout the 2oth century.
The City of Atlanta is on many levels, typical of North American cities. Though it is well over 100 years old, it has seen most of its growth during the latter part of the 20th century. Atlanta is typical of most post WWII boom cities that modeled their growth patterns on automobile dependence. This makes the urban pattern of Atlanta very similar to that of many other newer cities in North America, especially cities in the Sunbelt. The growth boom of Gay residents in Atlanta parallels the growth boom of many other visible Gay communities in America. It is for these reasons why I felt that Atlanta would make an excellent example for Gay community formation in North America.
