Abstract
The REST architectural style is a fundamental description of the Web's
underlying architecture. Recent developments of rich internet applications have
drifted away from this basic architectural style which threatens the continued
growth of applications on the Web.
We present a semantic hypermedia framework that recaptures the intent of
the "hypermedia as the engine of application state" constraint of REST by
introducing semantics into the hypermedia. Semantics enable Web clients to
intelligently process resources. We further define a formal approach using
attribute grammar to verify the semantics in the resource representation.
We include a detailed example of how this semantic hypermedia framework
can be utilized to efficiently build Web applications without sacrificing any of the
dynamism and interactivity that users expect from current Web applications.
