Abstract
Mr. Doomsday is a novel that follows events in the life of the protagonist Miles McCarthy, a 50-year-old man who is divorced, childless, and lives alone on his boat in a run- down marina on San Francisco Bay in South San Francisco. He regards his life as a failure. He feels stuck and "frozen" in place. On the morning that he loses his job he decides to end his life, but before he can carry out his plan, he is unexpectedly visited by a friend whom he has not seen in almost thirty years. By means of a wager, his friend persuades Miles to stay alive for one more month and assist him with a mysterious project. The unexpected demands of the project send him across the Pacific and into the core of his personal torment--and provide him with new unexpected ways of looking at his life.
