Abstract
Slipping Away is a novel that follows events in the lives of three protagonists who struggle with isolation, regret, and longing for the past. Jayla Carter, a thirty-two-year-old African-American woman, chooses to walk away from her life. Her decision propels Peter Reed, a discredited police detective, on a fanatical search to find her. Jayla finds sanctuary in Santa Lea, a fictional Northern California beach town. There, she encounters Esther Johnson, a woman in her late fifties around whom the otherworldly swirls. Throughout the novel, one of these supernatural agents exerts her influence to unite Jayla, Peter, and Esther in a common endeavor that may or may not bring serenity, resolution, and redemption.
