Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses specific types of community-engaged practices within the distinct context of specific institutions. It discusses the College Corps, a groundbreaking initiative implemented by the Office of the Governor to create a pathway to graduating with less debt by offering funded service opportunities to college students. The book explores the experiences and perspectives of the different stakeholders involved in campus community engagement. It outlines lessons derived from the pandemic for the community college system that, we believe, apply across higher education. The book argues that understanding our students’ experiences and their intersectionality is necessary for us to reach them, and that current examples of “faculty resilience and innovation abound”. It explores the unique roles that individual stakeholders play in implementing, supporting, and promoting community-engaged learning in higher education, recognizing that the geographical and institutional contexts of our work vary greatly.
