Abstract
This chapter focuses on the experience of colorism within Filipinx communities. The history of colorism within the Filipinx community derives from a history of colonization of the Philippine archipelago and resulted in global diaspora. One area where Filipinx immigrants then settled was the San Francisco Bay Area. These nine counties that make up this area are the setting for the Filipinx Bay Area Skin Stories project. We are currently interviewing a range of Filipinx residents in these counties and analyzing their experiences. We find that their experiences vary in terms of gender, generational difference, location, advocacy, and mental health. While these data are not exhaustive of all colorism narratives, it does begin to illuminate how histories of colonization now impact Filipinx views on skin color, attractiveness, and mental health.
