Abstract
This essay answers Mendoza and Kinefuchi’s call to reconceptualize our understanding of intercultural communication in meaningful relation to an ecological turn and its urgencies. We do so by mapping pathways and possibilities emerging at the intersection of critical intercultural communication and critical environmental communication to offer an eco-critical intercultural communication framework. Our essay highlights three possibilities for rethinking the relationship among power, culture, and the environment in the spirit of moving “beyond” normative, dominant stances: beyond the Anthropocene, beyond the Apocalypse, and beyond empire building.
