Diyong, U. J & Igboechesi, G. P. (2026). Challenges confronting the use of school media resource canters in secondary schools in Jos North LGA, Plateau State-Nigeria.
Abstract
Background: This study investigated challenges confronting the use of school media resource centers in secondary schools within the Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, Nigeria. The research aimed to identify existing obstacles and their impact on student achievement through two research questions and two hypotheses.
Methodology: Utilizing a descriptive survey research design, the study sampled 294 Junior Secondary School (JSS 2) students—selected via simple random sampling—from a total population of 1,178 across four schools. Data were collected using a self-structured, four-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation).
Findings: Results revealed that media resources are grossly inadequate for the teeming needs of the students. Furthermore, the challenges facing these resource centers significantly influence students' learning outcomes across the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.
Recommendations: The study recommends that the government and school management prioritize the adequate stocking of media centers to improve educational standards. It further suggests that the Ministry of Education implement policies making functional media centers a compulsory requirement for all secondary schools. Advocacy for establishing more centers is essential to ensure students reap the full academic benefits of modern resource facilities.
